The film was initially announced in December 2017, when Anthony and Joe Russo secured the rights to Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 illustrated novel The Electric State. The Russos were positioned as producers, while Andy Muschietti was in talks to helm the project. 

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, long-time collaborators of the Russo brothers, were slated to craft the screenplay.In December 2020, Universal Pictures acquired the distribution privileges for the film, with the Russos now at the helm and Muschietti staying on as an executive producer through his new production studio. 

Anthony Mackie and Billy Bob Thornton also became part of the cast. Ke Huy Quan, Yeoh’s co-star from Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), stepped in after she departed from the project due to scheduling issues. 

In October 2024, it was announced that Woody Harrelson, Alan Tudyk, Hank Azaria, and Colman Domingo had joined the lineup as the voices of robotic characters.

Principal filming commenced in October 2022 in Atlanta, utilizing the working title Tempest. On November 4, 2022, production was momentarily halted after a crew member involved in the film tragically passed away in an off-set car accident. 

Shooting officially concluded in early February 2023. By February 2024, reshoots had taken place from March 20 to April 5.[needs update] The musical score was created by Alan Silvestri, representing the third partnership between Silvestri and the Russo Brothers, following their collaborations on Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Movie Promotion

The initial official visuals and a synopsis of the movie were unveiled by Netflix on October 1, 2024. Dais Johnston from Inverse voiced apprehensions that these images indicated the film would appear to stray from the source material, as it demonstrated a visual aesthetic featuring “muddy color-grading” in contrast to Stålenhag’s original illustrations.

Netflix ultimately launched a teaser trailer on October 17, 2024, at New York Comic Con. It was also revealed that the film would mainly depart from the original narrative in an attempt to present its own unique story, which garnered a negative reaction from fans who were hoping for a faithful adaptation.
